Preliminary Feasibility Visits
At the request of community leaders, an Artspace team visits communities for one to two days to help start the process of creating affordable space for artists. As part of this fact-finding process, the team meets with artists, city officials, funders, and other stakeholders. They look at buildings and sites and generally hold a public meeting. The Preliminary Feasibility Visit is the first step in the process that can lead to an Artspace project.

Arts Market Surveys
Artspace conducts comprehensive surveys of individual artists, arts/cultural organizations, and creative businesses in the community or region. These surveys help communities measure the unique space needs of their artists and arts groups. Because these surveys accurately predict the demand for space, they help Artspace frame recommendations to the community and give prospective funders confidence that the project will succeed.

Special Assignments
These customized consultations are designed to address the specific needs of communities, organizations, and individuals with their own projects. For example, in 2007 we helped the National Trust for Historic Preservation assess the potential for arts-related development in the historic Chinatown district of Honolulu. In 2009, Artspace worked with the City of Long Beach, CA and a newly formed nonprofit, to advance plans for a cultural facility. In 2010, Artspace worked with the Actors Fund, to provide technical assistance on a mixed-use residential project for artists and others in the performing arts and entertainment fields in and around
Newark, New Jersey.

Needs and Use Assessments
Once a year, Artspace will take on a comprehensive Cultural Needs and Use Assessment for a community or group of cultural organizations. These assessments include project feasibility, site analysis, leadership potential, financial analysis, architectural analysis and other elements required by the community or key stakeholders.

Cultural Facility Development
Artspace works with nonprofit arts organizations that are seeking new or expanded space. While Artspace is typically not the developer in these situations, it works with the organization to advance its plans for space. For example, Artspace has worked with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to identify and oversee the development of a large rehearsal space, co-developed a new facility in Minneapolis for a new nonprofit with a focus on fire arts, and helped the Walker Art Center with its plans for the disposition of real estate before they moved into their new facility.
