Distinctively dynamic, and decidedly homegrown, the Artspace Mt. Baker Lofts Grand Opening was an energetic showcase of the residential and commercial tenants’ collective talent, camaraderie, and creativity as they opened their doors to more than 350 guests on a recent sunlit October evening.
The October 1st event encouraged the public to experience and explore Artspace’s newest development in Seattle, which sits directly adjacent to the Sound Transit Mt. Baker light rail stop. Many guests arrived by light rail—some using their commemorative Mt. Baker Lofts passes donated by Sound Transit—and enjoyed an evening that offered a chance learn about the multifaceted tenants who now call the Mt. Baker Lofts home.
The evening began with a performance by resident musician Rochelle House, joined by Evan Flory-Barnes and Darrius Willrich. Community leaders, key supporters, and tenants took time to publically acknowledge the collective effort that went into creating this remarkable property, and then the Community Room’s exterior garage doors opened and guests were invited to enjoy food, beverages, and tour artists’ open studios and commercial spaces throughout the building.
The plaza entertainment continued and featured Mt. Baker residents in festive performances by The m9, and Eurodanceparty USA. An open commercial space featured dancers Syreeta Bernal and Philippa Myler, while artist Emanate created colorful chalk art on the adjacent patio. Resident Mark Wilber of Starborne Sound managed sound engineering throughout the evening, and Jon Perry of Purpose: Crumbs & Croutons, and Kristi Brown of That Brown Girl Cooks! provided the catering. Residents David Torres, Admassu Guessese, Linda Shortell and Jordan Nicholson also played valued roles in putting this successful event together. It was a tremendous team effort culminating in a grand celebration and launch of this special Seattle property.
