Jackson Flats
About this Property
The Jackson Flats project, conceived by the Northeast Community Development Corporation (NE CDC), is the artist live/work housing community project in the leading Minneapolis Arts District of Northeast. This project will create a unique opportunity for artists to live in affordable space, collaborate with other artists and be an integral part of a thriving art community.
NE CDC has assembled the project site and led the effort to create project design documents. In spring 2009, NE CDC and Artspace Projects, Inc. (Artspace) began working together to establish an implementation plan to advance the project. Artspace brings a proven track record of successful artist live/work housing development, strong connections in the Twin Cities, and financial strength to the development team.
The Jackson Flats project will revitalize a vacant parcel of land at the corner of 18 ½ Avenue NE and Jackson Street NE through the creation of a new four story structure providing 35 units of new construction, rental live/work artist apartments, 35 underground parking spaces and a gallery and flexible community space (the Community/Gallery Space). The project is located one block west of Central Avenue, Northeast Minneapolis’ most important commercial and transit corridor.
The building has been designed to provide all of the ingredients for effective and innovative artist live/work space, including oversized doors, 10’ and 12’ ceiling heights, concrete floors, industrial strength plumbing fixtures, high quality natural lighting, sound privacy, good ventilation systems, underground parking, and industrial strength finishes and furnishings throughout. Common spaces within the building will provide critical additional amenities for artists, including common space to accommodate exhibition and community activities that are critical to the creation of an Arts Center.
