This one-of-kind network includes nearly 2,000 artists and 250 creative enterprises that are affiliated with Artspace's 40+ completed projects in 26 cities from coast-to-coast. It also includes a broad network of political, financial, architectural, construction and philanthropic partners who have helped build our $582 million portfolio of affordable art spaces.

The inaugural 2013 event took place at Artspace's Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts in Minneapolis. Approximately 350 people attended in person, and an additional 2,500 participated through live-stream broadcasts at 30 partnering sites from New York City to Honolulu. Featured artists included the Stepkids, Native Pride Dancers, and T. Mychael Rambo.

Breaking Ground took a major step forward in 2014, with the additions of a National Host Committee and the Artspace Awards, honoring Artspace-affiliated artists and supporters. Promotions and live steam occured in each of the nearly 40 cities where Artspace has a project in operation or under development, including Seattle, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles, as well as many smaller communities. Hosted by John Moe, featured artists included Ashley DuBose, Buckets and Tap Shoes and jazz trumpet master James Andrews.

For 2015, we estimated a reach of 5,000 artists, arts-supporters, and civic leaders. Based again at the Cowles Center in downtown Minneapolis, the 2015 Breaking Ground event included a VIP reception and artist-led event and awards ceremony.

The 2016 event will be held in the Twin Cities on October 14 and 15 as we welcome artists, community and civic leaders, non-profit partners, and creative folk from across the country for a unique two-day experience. Attendees will experience the St. Paul Art Crawl and tour studios; join artist talks and workshops on creative placemaking; and visit phenomenal places where arts and community intertwine. The event culminates on Saturday night with the Breaking Ground Celebration and the Artspace Artist Awards.

Artspace is seeking corporate sponsors to help underwrite this event. To learn more, please contact Kate Tucker at or (312) 206-7230.

Tickets will go on sale September 1, 2016.
