Northern Warehouse Artists' Cooperative
About this Property
The Northern Warehouse, Artspace's first major project, is a handsome red brick building with two floors of arts-friendly commercial and nonprofit tenants plus 52 affordable live/work units on the upper four floors. Its spacious units, some as large as 2,000 square feet, feature high ceilings, exposed brick and beams, large windows, and modern kitchens.
Built in 1908, the Northern stands two blocks from the Mississippi River in Saint Paul's Lowertown Historic District. The Tilsner Artists' Cooperative, another Artspace project, is next door; the Farmers' Market is just across the street; downtown stores, restaurants, and cultural attractions are within easy walking distance.
When the Northern Warehouse opened in 1990, fewer than 750 people lived in Lowertown. Once the city's commercial center, the district had become a derelict neighborhood, a ghost town of dark buildings and dusty memories. Today Lowertown is a thriving downtown community with a population of more than 2,000.
