Welcome to the Northrup King Building (NKB), a creative center to over 350 artists and arts-related businesses. It is the largest arts complex in the state of Minnesota! In 2019, Artspace acquired the NKB to preserve space for the existing arts community, and to expand access by redeveloping vacant structures. Artspace is a local nonprofit organization that has developed, owns, and operates more than 50 artist facilities across the US, with 16 right here in Minnesota.

The NKB complex is composed of 13 buildings, with six currently used for commercial and artist studios. Three of the seven vacant buildings will be redeveloped over the next three years, including the creation of 84 units of affordable, live/work housing for artists earning between 30 to 80% of Area Median Income (AMI). Since the acquisition, the NKB has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring that the Northrup King Artist Lofts will maintain the historic, industrial character found here. Future phases will involve the transformation of remaining vacant structures into an active and inclusive mixed-use arts community. Artspace is working with Public Functionary, which has their PF Studios in the NKB, to ensure that outreach efforts are inclusive and that the residential population reflects the rich diversity of artists in Minneapolis.
